GPA stands for Grade Point Average — a numerical representation of your academic performance on a standardized scale, most commonly 0.0 to 4.0 in the United States. Each letter grade you receive in a course is converted to a grade point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, and so on), then averaged across all your courses, weighted by the number of credit hours each course carries.
GPA is used by colleges for admissions decisions, by employers for hiring, and by academic institutions to determine eligibility for scholarships, honor societies, and graduate programs. Understanding how to calculate and track your GPA puts you in control of your academic record.
